The German American Heritage Center, Davenport, is sponsoring a contest for area artists to create Advent calendars.
These are calendars in which the overall scene, usually Christmas- or winter-related, contains 24 small windows or doors that are opened on the appropriate day counting down to Christmas Eve. Behind the window or door is a picture, piece of candy or other small gift. The calendar tradition began in Germany and is now enjoyed world-wide.
All calendars will become part of a holiday display at the center, open from Nov. 8 through Jan. 3. Prizes will be awarded on opening day in three categories: professional, adult amateur and child (18 years and under).
Submissions may be two- or three-dimensional and no larger than 5 feet by 5 feet. They are due in digital photo form by Oct. 23. For rules, go to the center's website at gahc.org.
After the exhibit, the calendars may be offered for sale in the center if the artist so chooses.
