MUSCATINE — The Muscatine Fire Department responded to a structure fire Friday morning that resulted in around $25,000 worth of damage to an apartment building.
Around 10:11 a.m. Friday, firefighters responded to a call of "lots of smoke and flames" at 306 W. 3rd St., Muscatine. Upon arrival, crews found heavy smoke coming from the basement apartment, according to Fire Marshal Mike Hartman.
Crews controlled the fire by 10:22 a.m., according to Hartman, who said the fire caused significant damage to one apartment, as well as the apartment above it. The fire caused smoke and structural damage, with the loss estimate at approximately $25,000, he said.
No injuries were reported. Two cats were rescued from a smoke-filled apartment and reportedly recovered from the event, Hartman said.
The American Red Cross was called to assist those displaced by the incident, according to a news release.
The Muscatine Fire Department was assisted by the Muscatine Police Department and Muscatine County Emergency Management. Around 20 firefighters responded to the incident, Hartman said.
