MUSCATINE – William I. Bishop, 89, of Muscatine, passed away on Thursday, October 26, 2017, at Lutheran Living Senior Campus.
Funeral service will be held at 12 p.m. on Wednesday, November 1, 2017, at the Ralph J. Wittich-Riley-Freers Funeral Home. Reverend Clark Pantel will officiate. Burial will take place in Greenwood Cemetery. Military rites will be provided by the combined squads of the American Legion Post 27 and the V.F.W. Post 1565. Visitation will be from 10 until 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, November 1, 2017, at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Mulford Evangelical Free Church Library. William was born on May 5, 1928, in Birmingham, Iowa, the son of Charlie L. and Ella Hawbaker Bishop. He married Anna Louise Wheeldon on June 1, 1950, in Ottumwa. She preceded him in death on September 9, 2012.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and worked as a nurse’s aide at the Veterans Hospital in Iowa City for 30 years. He was also a member of Mulford Evangelical Free Church. He was an avid pen collector; enjoyed woodworking and stamps; and was affectionately known as “puzzle man."
Those left to honor his memory include one daughter, Rose Yoder and husband, Jim, in Baxter, Tennessee; one granddaughter, Rebecca Sawyer; one grandson, Chad Bishop; one great-grandson, Chase Bishop; three step-grandchildren, Trent Yoder, Tia Yoder, and Todd Yoder; six step-great-grandchildren, Garrett and Pauline Jwerks, Charlotte and Susan Yoder, and Sam and Henry Yoder; and several nieces and nephews.
William was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; one son, Gordon Bishop; one step-great-granddaughter, Ivy Jane Yoder; one sister, Annie McWilliams; and three brothers, Louis, Dorsey, and Harold Bishop.
