It’s been an interesting week. Local and national headlines that would ordinarily seem like a big deal have almost blurred together for me. Mayor Broderson is officially ousted. President Trump and Russia is in the news again. The Iowa Supreme Court certified a class-action lawsuit that is of interest to many local citizens. And area teens face charges after a threat is made at Muscatine High School.
All in all, it was a pretty big news week, yet I barely blinked. Perhaps it is the hours spent working on our upcoming Salute to Graduates section, or perhaps it is the stress I feel helping my family prepare for my sister’s upcoming nuptials. It could be my battle to reclaim my yard once created by a Master Gardener that had been left un-mastered for many years. And maybe it’s just that the Chicago Cubs are fighting to win more games than they have lost.
So I enjoyed a little bit of good news when I found it in the eyes of Sutton DeVore, eagerly looking at his very first birthday sundae at Happy Joe’s in Muscatine. For starters, who doesn’t love the once-a-year indulgence but the fact that this child gets to experience this Muscatine tradition is the happy news story I’ve been seeking.
Sutton James DeVore was born to Muscatine natives Jaclyn Thompson and Steve DeVore 23 weeks early, weighing 1 pound, 8 ounces aand measuring 12 inches long on April 23, 2016. The family, who now lives in Hermosa Beach, California, spoke to the Muscatine Journal on several occasions about the overwhelming support they had received from the Muscatine community and from across the country.
Members of the community got to follow Sutton’s story through online and social media posts. We’ve watched as this tiny baby with wires coming from every direction has grown into an active little guy ready to steal your heart. Sutton got to go home from the hospital on Sept. 21, 2016, and just recently celebrated his first birthday. He is now making his Muscatine debut for an extended celebration along with his parents and sister Symone.
Congratulations to the #suttonstrong family of four. Welcome to Muscatine.
