COLUMBUS JUNCTION, Iowa — Multiple area fire departments were called to a fire at a hog confinement facility 10 miles west of Columbus Junction.

According to Lynn Mincer, chief of the Columbus Junction volunteer fire department, the call came in at 12:53 p.m. Friday about a fire at Mipa Hog Farms, 19335 County Road X17, north of G56.

The confinement is owned and operated by Mike Braun, of Columbus Junction.

Mincer said that two farrowing buildings —where piglets are raised — were a total loss. He didn’t have a specific total on lost animals but said that it was “a lot.” Veterinarians were on the scene helping what animals they could.

In response to the fire, the American Red Cross provided canteen services for the first responders on the scene.
