MUSCATINE, Iowa – Iowa Secretary of State Matt Schultz announced Monday that a Muscatine woman pled guilty in a voter fraud case.
The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation referred the case to Muscatine County Attorney Alan R. Ostergren, who filed the charge.
Mayra Alejandra Lopez Morales, whose address was last reported as 817 E. Eighth St., pled guilty to an amended charge of fraudulent practices in the third degree, an aggravated misdemeanor, on July 24. Lopez Morales was originally charged with election misconduct in the first degree, a class D felony.
She was convicted of registering to vote and voting in the 2012 general election while being a non-citizen. Lopez Morales was sentenced to a deferred judgment of two years unsupervised probation and a $750 civil penalty.
