CENTERVILLE, Iowa — The Muscatine Community College baseball team had a tough draw to open the first day of the Division I Region XI baseball tournament.
MCC opened tournament play against Iowa Community College Athletic Conference champions and eighth-ranked Iowa Western.
The Reivers scored seven first-innings runs and cruised to an 11-1 victory in six innings over the Cardinals, who led 1-0 after half an inning on Phil Langlois' run-scoring groundout.
Three MCC pitchers gave up 11 hits while walking five, with starter Hunter Peebler only lasting 1/3 of an inning while giving up five runs to pick up the loss.
The Cardinals moved on to an elimination game late Friday against tournament host Indian Hills, but that game didn't finish before deadline. The teams were tied at 1-1 in the 10th inning at deadline.
The loser of that game was eliminated, while the winner moved on to an elimination game Saturday.
