COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa — Kayla Gaunt pitched nine innings of shutout ball and Lexie VanderMoortel drove home Julia Sass with the go-ahead run in the first game of a doubleheader to help the Muscatine Community College softball team split with Iowa Western Community College Friday evening.
The Cardinals knocked off the Reivers 1-0 in nine innings in the opener but fell 6-0 in the second game to split the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference twinbill.
"Kayla pitched extremely well, kept the hitters off balance," MCC coach Scott Beatty said of the first game victory.
MCC (32-11, 5-5 ICCAC) nearly added to its lead in the ninth after an Alex Tuminaro single put runners on second and third after VanderMoortel's run-scoring hit but the Reivers (33-19, 9-3) got a diving catch to get out of the inning.
Iowa Western earned the split by taking advantage of some defensive miscues by the Cardinals behind starter Bailey Blake in Game 2.
"Offensively we didn't do a lot," Beatty said. "Defensively, we let Bailey down. Numerous times we had the ball on the infield and didn't make plays."
