MHS freshmen boys upend Rockets

MUSCATINE, Iowa - Drew Minder scored a team-high 18 points, including critical free throws down the stretch, as the Muscatine ninth-grade boys basketball team held off Rockridge, 58-48, on Monday.

David Miller poured in 15 points and Kyle Calvert chipped in 11 for coach Brendan Nagel's club.

The Muskies trailed by one at halftime, but scored Rockridge 15-7 in the third quarter.

"I don't want to take anything away from (Rockridge), but we didn't play as well as we did last Thursday," Nagel said. "We gave up a lot of offensive rebounds, weren't as sharp defensively and missed a lot of free throws down the stretch.

"It was a little more dicey than I wanted, but I'm proud of the kids for hanging in there and digging it out."

Muscatine (2-1) travels to Davenport North on Thursday.
