OTTUMWA, Iowa — Durant and Wilton’s cross country teams made the long trip to Ottumway for Monday’s weather-delayed Class 1A state qualifying cross country meet a successful one.
Durant’s Ben Friederichs claimed the championship in the boys race with a time of 15:18. He will be joined at Saturday’s state cross country meet by teammate Slater Marshall, who placed fifth in 15:48 in the meet at Wildwood Park.
Wilton’s boys cross country team, led by Adam McNamara, is heading to Fort Dodge after placing third as a team with 111 points. McNamara also qualified as an individual with his eighth place finish in 15:57.
Highland Riverside was the district team champion, followed by Woodward Academy and Wilton. Durant’s boys placed fourth as a team with 131 points.
On the girls side, three individuals and one team will be heading for state.
Durant placed a pair in the top five in earning a spot as state as a team.
Alyssa Williams placed fourth in 15:43, with teammate Cheyanne Heinrich fifth in 15:45 in leading Durant to a second place team finish.
Wilton will be represented in Fort Dodge by Caitlin Bisby, who placed sixth in 15:49.
Pekin won the meet with 37 points, while Durant was second wtih 70 points and Lynnville-Sully was third with 104 points. Wilton placed seventh with 177 points.
The top three teams and top 10 individuals in both girls and boys races will participate in the state meet on Saturday at Kennedy Park’s Lakeside Golf Course just north of Fort Dodge. The Class 1A girls race starts at 2 p.m. and the boys race at approximately 2:30 p.m.
