Muscatine boys swim coach Judd Anderson had two goals for his state qualifiers on Saturday − improve in time and in place.
A bonus would have been to score points, "just to reinforce that we were there," Anderson said.
The Muskies didn't make it on the scoreboard at Saturday's state swim meet, which moved from Marshalltown to the University of Iowa's Campus Recreation and Wellness Center for the first time this year, but they did meet the goals their coach had set out for them.
Senior John Wieskamp and freshman Ryan Boeding tied for 21st in the 50 freestyle in 22.37 seconds after entering with the 23rd and 24th best times in the state.
A 400-free relay team that included senior Isaac Heth, junior Wade Whiteside, Boeding and Wieskamp improved its qualifying time by 1.31 seconds and placed 17th overall after entering with the 21st fastest time in Iowa.
Rounding out Muskie qualifiers, a 200-free relay team of Wieskamp, Boeding, Whiteside and Heth finished 17th overall in 1:30.03.
Ames edged West Des Moines Valley by a point for the team title, 221 to 220, while Bettendorf and Ankeny both finished tied for third with 166.5 points. Waukee rounded out the top five with 153 points.
While Wieskamp and Heth are graduating from Muscatine in the spring, the Muskies will return Boeding and Whiteside to next year's team.
