The West Liberty girls basketball team continued to show progress Saturday despite falling to 0-2.

Just a handful of days after scoring more points than they had in a game all last season in a season-opening 68-49 loss to Wilton, the Comets matched that scoring output in a 65-49 loss to Winfield-Mount Union.

Macy Akers continued to pace West Liberty on offense, scoring 23 points on 7-of-13 shooting including 2-of-5 on three-point attempts.

The junior is leading the state in free-throw attempts through two games with 24, converting 15 of those tries, and is averaging 19.5 points per game.

Sophomore Haylee Lehman also had a nice game for the Comets, scoring 13 points and dishing out two assists.

West Liberty's two starting freshmen, Isabel Morrison and Janey Gingerich, each recorded six rebounds.

The Comets will be back in action again on Friday at 6 p.m. for their home opener against Bellevue (1-1).
