Comets cruise: West Liberty easily dispatched Cascade, 25-15, 25-19, 25-23, at home Thursday night. Brianna Morales led the Comets, who are ranked No. 6 in the Class 3A Iowa High School Volleyball Rankings, with 11 kills and two blocks. Hallie Mueller and Martha Pace each added eight kills, while Macy Akers steadied the defense with24 digs.
West Liberty (11-1) will travel to Wilton for a showdown of top ten teams at 7:15 p.m. Tuesday.
Muskies place 13th: The Muscatine boys cross country team placed 13th out of 19 teams at the Cedar Rapids Invitational Thursday. Tyler Olson led the Muskies, as the Iowa commit placed 24th in 16:57. No other Muscatine runner placed in the top 50, and Tevin Tovar was its second best runner on the day with a 56th place finish in 17:39. Brighton Kraft placed 78th in 18:14.
"The results may not show it but this team loves to work hard and get better every day," boys cross country coach Chris Foxen said. "A lot of credit goes to the captains, Tyler, Tevin and Brighton. They have really been the example."
Columbus goes down in four: The Columbus volleyball team dropped its third straight match Tuesday to the Iowa Mennonite School in four sets Tuesday. Courtney Zaehringer and Maki Mendenhall each had three aces, and Mendenhall also led the team in both digs (27) and kills (16). Zaehringer led Columbus in assists with 23.
