She was raised by her maternal grandmother Alice Mabel Dykes Freers and later adopted by her aunt and uncle Jennie (Freers) and Walter Schmidt. Throughout her life, Barbara was blessed to have an abundance of aunts, uncles and cousins who also welcomed her into their families. She lived her entire married life farming, being a homemaker and raising her family on the same farm in the Sweetland area. Barbara was also a school bus driver for over 30 years with the Muscatine School District and had previously worked at the telephone office as a local operator. She was a long-time member of the Muscatine Garden Club.

Barbara was a dedicated St. Louis Cardinals fan and enjoyed gardening, music, camping, fishing and watching barges navigate the Mississippi River. But most of all she enjoyed spending time with her family and friends.
