One Muscatine couple wants to help you Feather Your Nest

MUSCATINE, Iowa — Most people are thinking about wrapping up their working careers and looking forward to retirement when they reach their 60s. But Sharon and Dennis Froelich of Muscatine have opened a new business they believe will fill a need in the Pearl City - Feather Your Nest Interiors at 215 W. Second St.

Dennis worked in management positions at C and K Processing for 25 years and managed Tire Environmental Services Inc. for four years. And Sharon upholstered furniture in the basement of the couple's home for 20 years. The Froelichs are also acquiring the space next door to their new store, where Sharon will continue upholstering. The retail side features top of the line furniture manufactured by Norwalk of Norwalk, Ohio, and by Smith Brothers Furniture of Berne, Ind.

"We emphasize that they are made in America, in the American Midwest, putting American workers back to work," says Sharon. "This is a step in a different direction (for us)."

Dennis believes the time for their new business has come, although it has its challenges. "It is an adventure," he says. "You get new stuff, and you haven't figured out how everything works. It's going to be a fun thing because Muscatine really needs a furniture store that has what I would call ‘lifetime furniture.'"

"We've been here (living in Muscatine) for over 30 years," says Dennis, who has helped Sharon with upholstering especially during the past two years. "Muscatine has been good for us, and we felt it was time we expanded on it."

The Froelichs are not strangers to the furniture business. "My family had a hardware/furniture store I worked in in Minnesota, and Sharon has 20 years in it," he says. "There's not much we haven't seen as a family in furniture."

The Froelichs' daughter, Alyshea Diehl, 32, recently returned to Muscatine from Atlanta and is helping in the business. Dennis says she has a strong background in the furniture business. "She's worked on the commercial side with hotels, motels, and businesses."

The Froelichs are pleased with their location - right across West Second Street from Pearl Plaza. "Pearl Plaza is the draw in downtown Muscatine, and that's one of the things we wanted to be, because we're unique," Dennis says. "We have unique things that haven't been in Muscatine before."

Feather Your Nest Interiors does not have a website, but the Froelichs say it's in the future. And they say their business has a Facebook listing.

A grand opening is planned for July 28-Aug. 1, coinciding with Great River Days.
