On senior night earlier this month, Muscatine wrestling coach Joe Kane said his senior class has raised the bar for the rest of the wrestlers in the program.
Saturday, that standard was moved just a bit higher thanks to senior Shane Mathias.
Mathias, wrestling at 220 pounds, became Muscatine’s first ever champion at the J-Hawk Invitational in Cedar Rapids. The Muskies placed fifth as a team with 152 points. Underwood won the invitational with 223 points while Iowa City High placed second.
Mathias, who is 25-7 on the season, won both of his matches by falls to claim the title. The first came over over Indianola’s Wes Hogard in 4 minutes, 34 seconds before eventually pinning Clinton’s Hunter Randall in 5 minutes, 57 seconds to earn the title.
Carson Harder (132), Brennan Broders (182), Dalton Sell (195) and Togeh Deseh (285) all placed third for Muscatine. Broders won by a pin while Sell, Deseh and Harder won by decision. Jett Fridley (120) and Takpor Tiah (152) placed fourth for the Muskies.
Muscatine will be back in action for a triangular against Davenport North and Bettendorf Thursday at Davenport North High School.
