DAVENPORT, Iowa — The Muscatine boys swimming team did not win any of the 11 events at Saturday's district meet, but it still had plenty to smile about afterward.
Coach Judd Anderson's squad qualified for this week's state meet in three individual events and a pair of relays.
Senior Wade Whiteside qualified in a maximum four events. He was fifth at the district meet in the 200 individual medley (2 minutes, 3.52 seconds) and fifth in the 100 butterfly (53.95).
Whiteside also swam on Muscatine's 200 and 400 free relays that were among the state's top 24 times.
Daylon Shelangoski finished third in the 100 butterfly (53.74) and Ryan Boeding placed fourth in the 50 free (21.64), both well above the state-qualifying cutoff marks. Shelangoski and Boeding joined Whiteside on the two qualifying relays.
Will Zillig was the fourth member of the 200 free relay, which took fourth in 1:30.26. Carson Orr anchored the sixth place 400 free relay.
Contested at Davenport Central's facility, Pleasant Valley edged Bettendorf for the district title, 411-397. Dubuque Hempstead was third at 326, followed by Dubuque Senior (238) and Muscatine (235) in the eight-team field.
Boeding's 50 free time was the seventh best registered across the state during district competition. It will get him into the final heat this weekend.
For the second consecutive year, the state meet will be contested at the Campus Recreation & Wellness Center at the University of Iowa. Swimming begins just after the noon hour Saturday.
