IOWA CITY — Muscatine qualified for the boys state swim meet in five events. The Muskies accrued team points (a top-16 finish) in two of them.
Led by a 10th-place finish from junior Daylon Shelangoski in the 100 butterfly and a 13th-place showing in the 200 freestyle relay, Muscatine accumulated 16 points Saturday to finish tied for 24th at the University of Iowa Campus Recreation & Wellness Center.
Ankeny won the program's first state championship with 226 points. Waukee was second at 210 and Mississippi Athletic Conference member Bettendorf took third with 205.5.
Shelangoski dropped more than a half-second off his district time in the 100 fly to finish in 53.15 seconds. Teammate Wade Whiteside also picked up a point with his 16th-place finish in the 100 fly in 54.09 seconds.
Shelangoski and Whiteside teamed with Ryan Boeding and senior Will Zillig for a season-best time of 1:29.83 in the 200 free relay. Boeding had the best 50 split of the group at 21.96 seconds.
Boeding was just outside the top 16 in the 50 free. He was 17th in 21.83.
Muscatine's 400 free relay of Boeding, Whiteside, Shelangoski and senior Carson Orr was 21st in 3:23.06. Boeding was the only member of the quartet to have a sub-50 split for 100 yards.
Whiteside swam 2:03.70 in the 200 individual medley.
The Muskies bring back Boeding and Shelangoski next year while Whiteside, Zillig and Orr graduate.
