Three comets take first: Alex Beaver, Will Esmoil and Austin Beaver each took first place to lead the West Liberty wrestling team to a third place finish at the Ed Hadenfeldt Wrestling Invitational on Saturday.
Lisbon won the team title while Solon placed second.
Alex Beaver (24-8) pinned his first two opponents, won his third match by a technical fall and beat Lisbon’s Cade Siebrecht in a 5-3 decision to win the title at 106 pounds. Austin Beaver, meanwhile, won his first match before pinning three consecutive wrestlers on his way to first place at 160 pounds. Austin, who is 28-4 on the season, pinned Solon’s Andy Brokaw in 54 seconds to win the title.
Finally, Esmoil’s title at 145 pounds came on a 9-4 decision over Vinton-Shellsburg’s Luke Radeke. Esmoil is now 22-2 on the season. AJ Lenz (170) placed second while Kobe Simon (220) placed third.
Durant swept at Ron Scott duals: The Wildcat wrestling team lost all three of their duals on day two of the Ron Scott Duals on Saturday. Durant fell to Central Decatur, 48-11, Harlan Community, 69-4, and Lathrop, 24-0. Cammeron Ruggiero won two of his three matches.
L-M 8th, Wilton 12th at Marion Invite: Cody Calvelage and Chase Kruse each placed second to pace the Falcon wrestling team at the Marion Invite Saturday. For the Beavers, Kael Brisker placed first and Coy Baker placed second.
Calvelage (24-2) pinned his first two opponents but was pinned in the championship match by Monticello’s Kain Luensman (30-0) to place second. Kruse, meanwhile, is 22-4 after going 2-1 on Saturday. He pinned his first two opponents but was pinned by Mount Vernon’s Nick Casey in 5 minutes, 7 seconds in the finals.
For Wilton, Brisker (34-1) was dominant as ever, winning his first two matches by a tech fall and his next two in a major decision to capture the title at 106 pounds. Baker, meanwhile, went 2-1 on the day to reach the finals and place second. He’s 21-6 on the season.
Meekers take first: Daniel and Colton Meeker both placed first Saturday at the WACO Warrior Invitational to lead the Wapello wrestling team to a 7th place finish.
Colton Meeker won the championship match at 113 pounds by a major decision while Daniel Meeker pinned his way to the title over WACO’s Jalen Collins in 56 seconds. Daniel is 20-4 on the season while Colton is 12-1. Chase Witte (106), Mitchell Moore (120) and Christopher Ewart (132) all placed second.
Wayne won the tournament and English Valleys placed second.
Durant 67, Bellevue 52: Easton Botkins scored 25 points, including 17 in the second half, to lift the Wildcats to a win Saturday in Cedar Rapids. Mason Compton added 11 points and Joe Lilienthal added 10 for the Wildcats (5-9).
Northeast 67, West Liberty 38: The Comets suffered their seventh consecutive setback with a 29-point loss Saturday afternoon. West Liberty (1-12) will be back in action Tuesday when it plays host to Durant.
West Liberty 51, Northeast 38: The Comets have won back-to-back games for the first time since November 2015 with Saturday’s 13-point win. West Liberty (4-11) had won two games in the previous two seasons combined entering this year.
The West Liberty girls will play host to Durant Tuesday.
