The dream of advancing to the state tournament duals is over for both the West Liberty and Wilton wrestling teams as of Wednesday evening.
West Liberty fell to Camanche 48-32 in the opening dual of the Class 2A regional duals at West Delaware. Wilton, meanwhile, was beaten by a score of 54-24 by Maquoketa in the first dual of the Class 1A regional dual at Lisbon.
For West Liberty, Alex Beaver, Talen Dengler, Will Esmoil, Coy Ruess, Kobe Simon and Ramon Martinez all won their matches.
Beaver was dominant on his way to a 15-0 technical fall win over Camanche's Jack Wruck at 106 pounds. Dengler, Esmoil, Simon and Martinez all won their matches by fall.
Ruess won what was the match of the dual, as he beat Camanche's Cade Everson in a 14-10 decision.
Wilton, on the other hand, got points from Calib Lily, Briggs Hartley, Gage Oien and Blake Conklin. However, Lily was the only wrestler to do so by beating an opponent, as Oien, Conklin and Hartley all received walkover wins.
Lily pinned Maquoketa's Michael Feldman in 3 minutes, 7 seconds to earn a win at 220 pounds. The dual featured nine forfeits, including one double forfeit at 152 pounds. Decimated by injuries throughout the season, Jacob Creamer (182), Chantz Stevens (170), Gaige Hendress (120) and Dalton Snider (126) were the only other wrestlers who participated for the Beavers.
Both West Liberty and Wilton have wrestlers still vying for a state berth. For Wilton, Kael Brisker, Zach Delever, Coy Baker, Lily and Hartley all advanced to Class 1A districts.
For the Comets, Sam Gingerich, Alex Beaver, Esmoil, Austin Beaver, Ruess, AJ Lenz and Simon all advanced to Class 2A districts.
